Interim Report - DER 85-16 A 50.55(e) Potentially Reportable Deficiency Relating to The Ap Fan Wheel Hub Casting Failure File:
8T-019-026; D.4.33.2
Dear Sir:
l The NRC was notified of a potentially reportable deficiency in the referenced telephone conversation. At that time, it was estimated that a determination of reportability would he made within thirty (30) days.
One of the deficient hub castings has been returned to the manufacturer for failure analysis. Due to the extensive investigation and eval-untion required, an Interim Report is attached.
It is now expected that this information will be finalized by July 12, 1985, at which time a complete report will be submitted.

INTERIM REPORT - DER 85-16 POTENTIAL REPORTABI.E DEFICIENCY ARIZONA NUCLEAR POWER PROJECT PVNCS UNIT dL 3 I.
Potential Problem Spokes in the hub of ACU IM-HJB-ZD4 (Unit 1) were broken. The ACU had been in operation for approximately two years. ACU 3N-RJB-ZO4 (Unit 3) was inspected as a possible replacement for the deficient Unit 1 equipment, however, its spokes were cracked. 3N-HJB-ZO4 has never been operated on site. Refer to EER's 85-HJ-051 and 85-HJ-054.
Based upon the conditions identified in Unit 1 and Unit 3, the American Air Filter air handling units supplied on P.O. 10407-MM-721A are suspect.
II.
Approach To and Status Of Proposed Resolution As an interim solution, ANPP machined a new fan wheel hub from higher strength material to replace the deficient hub casting in Unit 1.
ACU IM-HJB-ZO4 is operable.
Bechtel Engineering is corresponding with the manufacturer, American Air Filter Company, Inc., who is performing a failure analysis on one of the hub castings.
Determination of reportability and technical justification for permanent corrective action are pending results of the analysis.
III.
Projected Completion of Corrective Action and Submittal of the Final Report The complete evaluation'and Final Report are forecast to be completed by July 12, 1985.
