Reference:
GPUN Letter C321-92-2282/5000-92-3071 dated October 2, 1992, "lGSC' Examinations and Weld Overlay Repairs".
In the referenced letter, GPU Nuclear.orovided a detailed explanation as to why current refracted longitudinal wave or UT inspection methodologies would not yield meaningful results in IGSCC inspections for cast stainless steel components; specifically the reactor recirculation pumps.
In follow-up telcohone conversations with the NRC Staff on this subjact, it was agreed that visual axamination for IGSCC consistent with ASME Code Case N-481,
" Alternative Examination Requirements for Cast Austenitic Pump Casings,Section XI, Division 1",
was appropriate for the reactor recirculation pumps.
Accordingly, GPU Nuclear aarees to inspect, consistent with Code Case N-481, Item (c), those internal surfaces of the reactor recirculation pumps which are subject to possible IGSCC.
Each indivioual pump will be inspected when it is next disassembled for maintenance and access to these internal surfaces becomes available.
If a reliable and repeatable ultrasonic examination method for cast stainless steel components is developed, GPU Nuclear will reconsider performing UT inspections in lieu of the visual inspections for the reactor recirculation pumps.
