In response to Mr. Charles Gackins.(NRC/NMSS), questions-concerning the security portion of'the Safety Evaluation Report'(SER) for Catawba Nuclear. Station-(Unit 2), the following is provided, n.
Pu'rsuant to 10 CFR 50.34(c),. Duke Power Company submitted the Catawba Nuclear' Station Security Plan dated June _29, 1981, which outlined Duke's
. plans..to provide physical protection for Units 1 and 2 in accordance with
~
the requirements of_10 CFR 73.55.
_18,:1984, the'NRC approved Catawba Nuclear Station
' Beginning.on July Security Plan, Revision 5~ Additional Pages, dated' June 25, 1984 was implemented'for Unit 1 only since Unit 2 was still in the construction
- phase. fSince July'18, 1984-interim security measures have been implemented
-. which included the use of an interim barrier to separate Unit 1 from
. Unit 2. >These interim measures are detailed in the Catawba Nuclear
- . Station Security Plan,. Revision 7 dated November-28, 1984 in Chapter 10.0 Construction Operations.
Based on current scheduling, Duke Power Company plans to-incorporate Unit::2.into the security protected area during October 1985. As part of this -transition, Duke Power Company plans to submit a revision to the F
. Catawba Nuclear Station Security Flan to delete the' interim barrier i
requirements.
Physical. protection measures.(including vital area protection) will be i
fully implemented for Unit'2. prior to the~ receipt of an operating license.
