Interim 10CFR50.55(e) Report:
Improper and Mixed Incompatible Greases in Fan Motor Bearings (CDR-85-00-08)
Dear Sir:
On May 14, 1985, we reported a potential 10CFR50.55(e) deficiency, Reference (b), regarding the use of improper grease and the mixing of incompatible greases in fan motor bearings. The reportability of this item is under evaluation.
Description of Deficiency The grease found utilized in several Class 1E fan motor bearings is believed to be a lithium based grease due to its brown color. The subject Class IE motors were qualified with a polyurea based grease (dark green in color) which is the type of grease specified by the manufacturer for these motors. Polyurea and lithium based grease are incompatible, even in small quantities. The use of incorrect or incompatible greases may reduce the service life of the bearings and lead to premature bearing failure.
Safety Implications We are evaluating the safety implication and extent of the above deficiency.

Mr. Richard W. Starostecki, Director Page 2 Corrective Action We are evaluating the concerns of this deficiency for applicability to all motors and driven equipment (fans, pumps, valves, etc.).
The results of our evaluation will determine the reportability of this potential deficiency and the corrective action as applicable. We will submit an additional report to Region I by September 30, 1985.
This letter is being flied pursuant to the interim reporting provisions of 10CFR50.55(e)(3).
