UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 8 June 13, 1985 k * * . . * ,o Docket Nos: 50-424 and 50-425 Mr. Donald 0. Foster Vice President and General Manager Georgia Power Company P.O. Box 299A, Route 2 Waynesboro, GA 30830

Dear Mr. Foster:

Subject:

Eliminating Postulation of Arbitrary Intermediate Pipe Breaks in the Main Feedwater System of Vogtle Units 1 and 2 By letter dated April 24, 1985, you proposed that the postulation of arbitrary intermediate pipe breaks in the main feedwater system of Vogtle Units 1 and 2 be eliminated. In support of this request, you provided technical information regarding water hammer minimization features in the main feedwater system incorporated into the design and operation of the plant.

The staff has reviewed this information and has concluded that the main feedwater system is designed with features to minimize the potential for damaging flow instabilities (water hammer). We therefore find your proposal to be acceptable.

The staff's evaluation is enclosed.

Sincerely, l
