Mencuer, Regional State Liaison Of ficer SU3 JECT: TRIP REPORT - PRINCETON, ILLINOIS On February 18, 1982 C. J. Paperiello and I were in the subject location attending a public sweting concerning the Shef field Nuclear Vaste Disposal Site. Presentations were made by Barbara Chaenoff, Assistant Illinois Attorney General and Philip T. Custaf son, Director.

Illinois Departament of Nuclear Safety (DNS) who suussarised recent activities at Shef field regarding tritium migration of f site in ground water. - Tollowing the presentations, a panel consisting of Ms. Charnof f; Dr. Custaf son; David Ed. D55; Howard Chin. Engineer, Attornay General's Of fice; Dr. Paperia11o and I responded to questions from the audience which consisted of approximately seventy local residents, state legislators, municipal and county of ficials, environmental groups, and the news media.

The audience was concerned with the proposed U.S. Ecology (USE) acquisition of of f site property under which tritium was detected, any health hasards posed by the tritium concentrations found in the ground water, decommissioning the site, the status of the site's license. U. S. Ecology's previous activities at Mary Flats, plans to arrest tritium migration off site, the extent of monitoring _welle at USE's chemical site, the geological composition of the site, the locations and depths of the monitoring walls, possible of f site migration of other radioactive elements besides tritium.: the i permeability of the site burial trenches, grose alpha and radium j levels in the ground water, the details of the recent agreement t
