Seismic Analysis of ESW Pumps Backwash Internals

[RDC 136(85)]

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This letter serves as the interim report pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e) on the potential significant deficiency concerning the lack of seismic analy-sis on the backwash assembly internals for the Emergency Service Water (ESW) and ESW Screenwash pumps.

Mr. J. A.

Grobe of your office was notified on May 8, 1985, by Mr. T. A.

Boss of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company (CEI), that this situation was being evaluated per our Deviation Analysis Report #240.

Descriotion of Deficiency During our investigation for our response to IE Bulletin No. 83-07, "Apparently Fraudulent Products Sold by Ray Miller, Inc.",

it was discovered that the strainers utilized in our ESW and ESW Screenwash systems had been classified as non-active components and therefore the backwash assemblies had not been seismically qualified.

The strainer shells have been designed and qualified to maintain pressure integrity.

The affected strainers are as follows:

24" ESW Pump Strainers:

IP45D002A 1P45D002B 2P45D002A 2P45D002B 8" ESW Discharge Strainers:

IP45D003 2P45D003 6" ESW Screenwash Pump OP49D003A Strainers:

u, Mr. Jcmes G.-K ppler Jun1 6, 1985 PY-CEI/OIE-0063 L Backwash of the strainers is required to be performed at eight hour intervals during ESW operation.

Completion of Evaluation The supplier of the identified strainers, R. P. Adams has been requested to perform a seismic analysis of the affected strainers.

The results of this analysis will. indicate whether the strainers are-qualified or if corrective action is necessary.

We will submit our next report on this subject following com-pletion of the analysis.- Please call if there are any questions.
