Dear Mr. Edelman:

Subject:

Environmental Qualification of Mechanical Equipment for the Perry Nuclear Power Plant (Units 1 and 2) - SER Outstanding Issue (4)

The staff has reviewed the environmental qualification information for three files pertaining to mechanical equipment installed in the Perry plant, submitted by your letters dated April 3 and May 22, 1985, and finds the information acceptably meets the requirements of applicable regulations and standards. However, before we can consider SER Outstanding Issue (4) to be fully resolved, as stated in Section 3.11 of SER Supplement No. 5, CEI must certify that all mechanical equipment is quali-fied or provide justification for interim operation for all unqualified equipment in order to obtain an operating license for Perry, Unit 1. It is also stated in SER Supplement No. 5 that CEI must notify the NRC staff that all electrical equip-ment important to safety is qualified in accordance with 10 CFR 50.59(1) or submit justification for interim operation prior to Perry Unit I licensing.

It is urged that such notification / certification or justification be submitted for staff con-sideration not later than 30 days prior to Perry Unit I licensing.

Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BYs
