0,i-UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION 5

WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555

,*****j JUN 6 1985 Docket No. 50-354 APPLICANT: Public Service Electric & Gas Company FACILITY:

Hope Creek Generating Station

SUBJECT:

SUDMARY OF DIESEL-GENERATOR / BUS DUCT CONFIGURATION MEETING 4

On April 25, 1985, a meeting was held in the Bethesda, Maryland offices of the NRC to discuss a number of issues concerning the configuration of the diesel generators and the offsite power bus ducts. Meeting attendees are identified in the enclosure to this meeting sumary.

The issues discussed were as follows:

' Issue 1: While penetrating adjacent diesel generator rooms, the offsite power bus cucts are not provided with a 3 hour3.472222e-5 days
8.333333e-4 hours
4.960317e-6 weeks
1.1415e-6 months
barrier for fire protection purposes.

Public Service has not identified this as a fire protection exemption in the FSAR. Presently, an aluminum baffle is in place for fire protection purposes.

Plans' call for replacing this baffle with a fire proof sealant. This sealant will be placed to a depth of 10-1/4 inches.

]

The staff noted that such an approach has been used successfully at Uctts Bar i

and Catawba. The staff stated that if Public Service plans to use this approach, j

the staff would need 1) assurance that there are no combustibles present in the zone where the temperature may exceed 325'F, and 2) assurance that if the ducts collapsed into the diesel generator room proper, the sealant would not pull out.

Public Service stated that the penetration seal report would be submitted for staff review.

Issue 2: Section 8.2.2.4 of the Hope Creek SER references a September 21, 1984 letter from Public Service which states that the bus ducts are separated by 3 hour3.472222e-5 days
8.333333e-4 hours
4.960317e-6 weeks
1.1415e-6 months
fire barriers. When shown a photograph of these ducts at the meeting, the staff observed that they were not protected by a 3 hour3.472222e-5 days
8.333333e-4 hours
4.960317e-6 weeks
1.1415e-6 months
fire barrier.

Public Service noted that the reference in the September 21, 1984 letter was l

to the switchgear bu,;ses being separated from the diesel generators by a 3 hour3.472222e-5 days
8.333333e-4 hours
4.960317e-6 weeks
1.1415e-6 months
barrier.
