Docket No.52-004 APPLICANT:

GE Nuclear Energy (GE)

PROJECT:

Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (SBWR)

SUMMARY

OfHEETINGWITHGEON5bkbfi5[17,1992

SUBJECT:

A pubile meeting was held between Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and GE Nuclear Energy-(GE) technical staff on December 17, 1992, in the NRC office in Rockville, Maryland.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the status of the testing programs under develo) ment by GE to support the design of the SBWR. Enclosure 1 is a list of tie staff and GE participants who attended this meeting.

Some of the major GE test programs currently in progress were summarized and discussed during this meeting. These test programs support the decay heat removal from containment and inventory control features of the SBWR.

The programs discussed during the meeting included the PANTHERS test (a full-scale performance and mechanical test of the isolation condenser (IC) and r'ssive containment cooling system (PCCS) heat exchanger component, the University test 3rograms (HIT / Berkeley) related to condensation heat transfer experiments for tie purpose of developing correlations for use in modeling the performance of the IC and PCCS, the PANDA test (a full-height 1/25 scale low-pressure integral system test of the passive safety systems), and the G!RAffE tests (a scaled low-pressure test of a heat exchanger for both the IC and PCCS modes of containment heat removal). Other GE test programs mentioned during the meeting included the full-height, volume-scaled test of the gravity-driven cooling system at GE's GIST facility.

The staff requested that GE formally address the status and future milestone schedules for the entire SBWR test program.

Included in the request was the l.

matrix testing and completion schedules on each of the test programs and how each of the specific test programs fit into the overall certification test program that support the design certification of the SBWR. GE agreed to provide this information to the staff by January 8, 1993.
