Dear Mr. Keppler:
1NT." RIM 10CFR50. 55 (e) /10CFR21. REPORT NO. ' U-25 '
CALLAWAY PLANT C' SIT 1 M
On November 12, 198G we subm:.tted ULNRC-397 wh'ich provided the timetable for our program'to determine-the suitability of the Callaway main control board welf.ing.
l The purpose of this letter in to update the referehc'e report concerning weld discrepancies in the Main Control Panels and Auxiliary Relay Racks furnished tc Callaway Unit 1 by Comsip i
Customline Corporation.
It is our understanding that the NRC, Region'IV was advised by Kansas Gas & Electric of similar weld discrepancies in the Control Panels and relay racks also furnished-by Comsip to Wolf Creek.
~
i Since the weld difficulties were first' identified last summer, a generic program has been developed on behalf of both Callaway and Wolf Creek Sites to assess the i= pact of the weld discrepancies upon the structural integrity of the Comsip furnished panels and racks.
This program consists of seismic testing of a' specially constructed prototype panel for purposes of determining.
the stress capabilities and limits cf welds similar to those in the Callaway and Wolf Creek panels.
Chis testing effort has been recently completed and the results'are being utilized to develop l
criteria against which the as-welded panels can be measured and evaluated. A series of planned inspections and measurements are i
presently being initiated at both jobsites and will be used to assess the impact of reported weld discrepancies and further to l
l provide a basis for disposition by the panel designer and by the architect-engineer.
We presently anticipate this effort being completed on or about July 1, 1981.
A report summarizing the result of those inspections and evaluations will be forwarded to the NRC shortly thereafter.
Ve truly yours, MHH/sla M
