Mr. Boyce H. Grier Re: Dockets 50-155, 50-255 US Atomic Energy Commission Directorate of Regulatory Operations Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137

Dear Mr. Grier:

In reply to your letter dated June 29, 1972, please be advised'that detailed verification records for minimum vall thickness requirements are not available.

.We are investigating and evaluating the appropriateness of.

various possible means of determining the adequacy of cast steel valve vall thickness to determine an optimum approach under conditions that vill be experienced in our operating plants. We vill inform you of the details of our investigation and evaluation as quickly as they are complete or in any, event not later than ninety days.

We have been unable to locate any specific instances on

~

gross valve failure due to thin valls. We vould be interested in any specific information on gross valve failures that leads the USAEC to

~

believe that the industry should be saddled with radiation exposures of the magnitude required to carry out a program for demonstrating acceptable vall thicknesses. described in your letter.
