BIG ROCK PLANT - CONSUMERS POWER COMPANY
Dear Mr. McCone:
At its twenty-fourth meeting on March 10-12, 1960, the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards considered the proposed Big Rock Plant which contemplates the installation of a single-cycle forced circulation boiling water type reactor (156 MW thermal) housed within suitable containment. It will be located at Big Rock Point on upper Lake Michigan near th: City of Charlevoix. An ACflS Sub-committee supplied with documents referenced below, together with representatives of the Hazards Evaluation Branch, the applicant and his contractor, reviewed the project on February 11, 1960. The applicant presented data covering the pertinent environmental aspects of the proposed site.
Presupposing continued generally favorable experience with boiling water reactors, the Consumers Power Company proposes to conduct an unusual four and one-half year research and development program sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission to explore the areas of high power densities, optimum conditions for higher power density operation, longer fuel life and reduced fuel fabrication costs.
It is anticipated a power level of 2h0 MW thermal may eventually be obtained. The Committee recognizes that the detailed design and the experimental program will require additional study later.
