l Introduction l I

The purpose of the meeting was to review the most recent off-shore geo- )

logic data which had been accumulated in support of the Units 2 and 3 1 application. (San Onofre geology-seismology was reviewed by the ACES in July 1971.) Reflection seismic work, magnetic data, refraction profiles, and gravity data were acessaulated by Western Geophysical at a cost of

$250,000. Velocity information was also obtained from the seismic reflec-tion data.

Discussion - E. Haceker, Western Geophysical Numerous charts and cross-sections containing the new data were displayed.

In the near shore region, several faults are seen along the entire south coast froct San Diego to near Long Beach. However, the faults are different l 1

on the north end (reverse faults) than on the south and (thrust faults). l' The " south coast of f-shore fault" is not believed to connect to either the Newport-Inglewood or Rose Canyon. faults.

In suunnary, a "high" exists in the center of off-shoreInsegment addition, the and this high separates the southern and northern sections.

characteristics of the northern and southern sections are different.

According to Mateker, this infers that there is not a continuous off-shore fault from Sen Diego to Newport-Inglewood.

a DRL/ San Cnofra 2-3 Meeting - 2- Meeting Date: February 10, 1972 Hunt reviewed the " sparker" data which gives information in the ares l between 1000' below ocean floor up to the floor. A " continuous zone i of deformation", off-shore from the plant and previously identified by l SC3, was reconffr=ad in the latest measurements and is found to be 7 .

miles long. The Christianitos is not found in the deep horizon referred j to as the "B" horizon. In general, fault displaceraents are reported to i become less as the ocean floor is approached vnereas the displacements  !

may be thousands of feet at depth. According to D. Moore, high resolution l sparker data shows no scarps greater than 5'. In response to Dr. Page's  !'

question, Hunt reported that they have specifically looked for these'senr s and have not seen enem. The previous Faults A, B, C, and D which had been identified by Marine Advisors, were based on a limited amount of sparker i data and apparently arenot seen on the current data.

Question and Answer Session -

Dr. Page questioned the use of gravity contours in defining geologic boundaries as Western Geophysical has done. (They identified a subduc-tion zone on their gravity map.)

Meeting of Regulatory Representatives Houser cocxnented that the whole geologic-seismologic picture should be submitted in one package. Four-eight weeks should be allowed for USGS review of this. Items identified for inclusion in the forthcoming amend-ment:

1. Gravity map - Profiles should be obtained from this.
2. Magnetic map - Los Angeles basin should be included.
3. Structures map - Some of this data is owned by oil companies and may not be available for submission but is available for inspection. Yerkes had some trouble with accepting the con-clusions in the public record without having all the background data in the same record. The on-shore rocks should be identified.
4. Connections between on-shore and of f-shore features - Items such as the terminus of the Christianitos fault and the land intersec-tion of the south coast off-shore fault should be provided.

l

5. Fathometer map - Further details around the location of l

faults.

6. Fault location - All faults plotted on one sheet with identifica-tion of which horizon each belongs to (basement, horizon B, or ocean floor).

7. Bore hole logs.
8. Velocity calculations.
9. For Dr. Wilson - A sn-= nary of the applicant's position on seismicity. l
10. San Diego area - Hora discussions on the geology here.

Dr. Page noted that not all the group agreed that the south coast off-sh, ore fault was not an extension of Newport-Inglewood. Minogue and Birkel felt 1 it would be untimely to:announce this publicly since the amendment has not yet been flied. Davine adead tnat he was distur' sad that no now effort has .

been made to evaluate the seismicity -- all the effort seems to be on geology. Wilson thought it was a little early to announce conclusions be-fore seeing the data in the amendment. ,

' Meeting with Total Attendance (cont'd)

The items identified above for inclusion in the amendment were real to the attendance. Minogue added that tsunamis should be treated also.

J. Moore commented that SCE would like to continue this dialogue on February 29. (This will be a DRL internal management-type meeting.)
