MEMORANDUM FOR:
E.G. Case, Chairman, Technical Activities
]
'5 Steering Committee FROM:
R.J. Mattson, Director, Division of Systems Safety
SUBJECT:
TASK NO. D-3 CONTROL ROD DROP ACCIDENT (BWRs)
The ACRS (letter to Joseph M. Hendrie from M.
Bender, " Status of Generic Items Relating to Light-Water Reactors:
Report No.
6," November 15, 1977) included the Control Rod Drop Accident (RWRs) in Group IE which lists generic items resolved since February 24, 1977.
The ACRS considered the Control Rod Drop Accident (BWRs) resolved through NRC review and documen-tation.
The rod drop accident was also discussed at two ACRS meetings:
one in 1976 and the other in 1977.
Subsequently, the Advisory Group on Task Action Plans recommended (Enclosure 2 to " Summary of Technical Activities Steering Com-mittee Meeting No.
8, February 8, 1978," memorandum from E.G.
Case to R.
Boyd et al., February 14, 1978) that DSS prepare the neces-sary documentation to close out Task D-3,
" Control Rod Drop Acci-dent (BWRs)."
Three NRC documents, provided as enclosures, describe the technical bases for considering the rod drop accident resolved.
These are:
1.
" Generic Item IIA-2 Control Rod Drop Accident (BWRs)," letter report from B.
Rusche to R.
Fraley, June 1, 1976.
2.
"BWR Rod Drop Accident (Generic Item IIA-2),"
memorandum from D.F.
Ross to M.
Bender, February 11, 1977.
3.
"ACRS Generic Item - IIA-1," memorandum from H.
Richings to W. Minners, September 27, 1977.
The documents support our conclusion that further analysis and effort on Task D-3 are not warranted.
