Subject:
Byron Generating Station Units 1 and 2 Containment Spray Pump Impe11ers NRC Docket Nos. 50-454 and 50-455-References (a): June 14, 1984 letter from T. R. Tramm to J. G. Keppler.
Dear Mr. Keppler:
This letter provides the final report on a deficiency in the Byron 1 containment spray pump impe11ers. This deficiency was jnitially reported to the NRC on May 4,1984 in accordance with the requircments of 10 CFR 50.55(e). For tracking purpoces, it was numbered 84-02.
As indicated in reference (a), the redundant containment spray pumps use impe11ers with slightly different dimensions. On Byron 1, the impellers were inadvertently switched. This was detected during preoperational testing.
In addition to the corrective action previously reported as complete on the Unit 1 pumps, the Unit 2 pump impellers have been removed and measured to verify size. The serial numbers have been correlated with
. vendor documentation and proper identification of pump impe11ers established.
Per the pump and motor manufacturers reviews, motor and pump parts are interchangeable with the exception of the pump impeller. To avoid future problems a letter had been filed with the instruction manual to provide the note, " Caution - Pump impellers cannot be switched due to different size and capacity." Copies of this letter have been distributed to CECO Quality Assurance, CECO Maintenance, and Hunter Corporation.
CECO Maintenance has noted the same comment in their Maintenance History File. Tags have been mounted to each of the pumps for identification and clearly mark each as either "A" or "B" train.

' April-18, 1985 An engineering-' review has determined that the containment spray'
- pumps are the only safety-related pumps.for which the redundant trains have different head / flow characteristics.' No similar precautions need to'be taken for.any other pump.
Please address any further questions regarding this matter to this office.
Very truly yours, fhr hW T. R. Tramm Nuclear Licensing Administrator 1m cc: Byron Resident' Inspector.
