Information on Sizing of an Indication in a Steam Generatmr Tube Pulled During the Tenth Refueling Outage Ladies and Gentlemen:

.This letter documents the information requested by the NRC Staff with Toledo Edison representatives during a telephone conference call on May 13, 1996.

This information provides the results of the eddy current sizing of the single axial indication found in tube 58-119 in Steam Generator A of the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station (DBNPS) during the recent tenth refueling outage. The sizing results are based on eddy current examinations performed prior to the tube segment removal. These results have been documented via the attached letter from Framatome Technologies (FTI) dated June 24, 1996.

The tube segment was shipped to FTI for inspection and received by their laboratory on June 26, 1996 for destructive analysis.

1 The attachment is provided as information-only at this time to the NRC Staff. Although depth sizing information is provided as requested, the DBNPS did not plan to attempt to assign a percent through-wall when the indication was first identified and elected to pull the tube for further analysis. This sizing was done prior to performing destructive analysis only per the NRC Staff's request. As discussed ~in EPRI document NP-6201 I

"PWR Steam Generator Examination Guidelines," no qualified technique currently exists to size axial type internal diameter (ID) flaws at roll transitions.

Characterization and Sizing ofIndication in RFO10 Steam Generator Tube Pull Sample Gentlemen:

The following summary outlines the characterization of the indication reported in tube 58-119 of the "A" OTSG during the RFO 10 outage at Davis-Besse.

I Descrintion l

The indication is described as a Single Axial Indication (SAI) located in the upper tube end roll expansion transition. The indication originates from the inside diameter and displays a purely Axial nature with the eddy current techniques employed for examination. There is no evidence of any volumetric or circumferential component to the indication.

Examination Technianes The examination software was Zetec Eddynet Version 1.9 and the examination techniques were Bobbin and MRPC.

I The Bobbin probe used was a type A-510-MULC/HF. This probe confirmed the presence of the indication with the application of a " Turbo" mix algorithm. The mix output from this type of data processing does not promote good phase angle to depth correlation and therefore is used only for detection / confirmation.

The MRPC probes employed the following coil types:

Probe 1:

3-Coil Delta Head with 0.115" Dia. Mid-Range Unshielded Pancake Coil,0.080" Dia.

High-Frequency Shielded Pancake Coil, Plus Point Mid-Range Coil.

I Probe 2:

3-Coil Delta Head with 0.115" Dia. Mid-Range Unshielded Pancake Coil, Axial

{

Directed Coil, Circumferential Directed Coil.

j Probe 3:

Gimbaled Plus Point Low-Frequency Coil (OTSG Sleeve Examination Probe).

The MRPC probes confirmed the presence of the indication and all agreed as to its' characterization.

Sizine Calibration The calibration parameters used for sizing were as follows:

Rotation - Probe Motion Horizontal Depth Curve - Phase Angle using ID Axial EDM Notches 100, 61,20 % through wall Notches are 0.50" long and 0.006" wide Distance Calibration - Calibration Standard end to end - 24" The guidance provided in " Points to Consider in Circumferential Crack Detection and Sizing, ISIG/L 2/21/95" were followed to the extent applicable.

Sizing Results Length and depth sizing was performed with several of the MRPC coils using data gathered prior to tube pull. The results of these measurements are presented below. Lengths are in inches and depths are as a percent of wall thickness. Results of two different (same design).115 pancake coils are offered.

Indication is located within approximately 1.5" of the tube end which posed difficulty with probe body stabilization and consequently produced an amplified probe wobble response.

Indication is located within a roll expansion transition which produces a response that may distort the response from the target indication.

Distance calibration was performed in the calibration standard outside the generator where probe speed characteristics may vary somewhat from that achieved in the actual tube. No axial encoders or probe tensioners were employed during the examination.
