SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 2 SPECIAL REPORT 85-03:

~

On March 13,.1985, with unit 1 in mode.1 (100 percent power, 2235' psig, 578 degrees F) the following fire barrier penetrations were opened:

Auxiliary. Building elevation 669 valve gallery to Boric Acid Room A.

a.

- b. - Auxiliary Building elevation 669_ Boric Acid Room A to Boric Acid Room B.

Auxiliary Building elevation 669 Boric Acid Room B to the Hot Tool Room.

c.

d.

Auxiliary Building elevation 669 Hot Tool Room to the Holdup Tank Room.

~

.5These six-inch pipe penetrations were opened to allow modifications to the heat tracing (circuit 32S)' of _the boric acid piping. This modification will increase the life expectancy. of the heat tracing and, therefore, reduce repairs and subscquent penetration breaches needed to effect repairs. While these modifications were underway, heat trace circuit 32P became inoperable due to a short circuit,'and.the decision was made to proceed with similar modifications to this circuit. Because-of the increase in the scope of the work involved, insufficient material was available to complete the modifica-tions. This-delay resulted in the subject penetrations being open for more -

than the seven days prescribed by Technical Specification 3.7.12.

-Based on the existing procurement schedule, modifications are expected to be complete and_the penetrations closed-by-April 19, 1985. - The hourly fire watch estab-f lished when the pentrations were first breached will continue until the

' penetrations are closed.
