Interim 10CFR50.55(e) Report; Insufficient Fillet Weld Size in Coped Area of Structural Members

Dear Sir:

On October 26, 1984, we reported a potential 10CFR50.55(e) item to Region I (Reference (b)). This item was initially identified during the Construction Appraisal Team Inspection and was subsequently addressed in our response (Reference (c)) to said inspection. The parallel reporting of this issue resulted in our delayed filing of this report.

The following information is provided under the interim reporting provision of 10CFR50.55(e)3:

Description of Deficiency Structural steel I beams supplied by Cives Steel were coped to insure proper assembly with installed wide flanged beams. The webs of coped beams were strengthened by fillet welding a plate to the web.

The fillet welds were undersized in certain areas. The undersized welds were due to physical limitations of the plate size and matching coped web size, as well as welding technique.

Analysis of Safety Implications The twenty structural steel welds identified by the NRC Construction Appraisal Team inside containment have been determined to be adequate taking no credit for the area of the weld (Reference (c)).

Corrective Action Similar coped joints in the remaining safety-related buildings have been i

identified. for engineering analysis to determine the requirements for strengthening the beam web. A detailed inspection of these connections will be performed to determine if sufficient weld area exists. The safety implications and corrective action will be determined af ter completion of the inspections.

An additional report will be submitted by March 31, 1985.
