CD&L Carolina Power & Light Company SERIAL: NLS-85-095 MAR 2 8 585 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention:

Mr. D. B. Vassallo, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 2 Division of Licensing United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNIT NOS.1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-325 & 50-324/ LICENSE NOS. DPR-71 & DPR-62 EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATORS

Dear Mr. Vassallo:

Carolina Power & Light Company has provided information to your staff relating to emergency diesel generators at the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant. This information was provided in a letter dated March 14, 1985 and was in response to your request for information dated January 30,1985 regarding a condition identified at the Surry Station.

In a subsequent review of this letter, an inadvertent error was detected which, although not material to the review of the issue identified at the Surry Station, could be misleading for subsequent reviews. The third paragraph of the letter submitted to you reads:

The Brunswick Plant does not use a swing diesel generator configuration.

Four diesels each serving separate emergency electrical buses are used. These diesels are effectively set up as two per unit. However, in the unlikely event of a loss of offsite power concurrent with a loss of coolant accident (LOCA), either unit could be safely shutdown even if the two diesels dedicated to that unit were not functional. For the reasons stated above, CP&L does not believe that the condition identified at the Surry Station is relevant to the Brunswick site.

This paragraph should read:

However, in the unlikely event of a loss of offsite power concurrent with a loss of coolant accident (LOCA), either unit could be safely shut down even if one of the two diesels normally associated with that unit were not functional. For the reasons stated above, CP&L does not believe that the condition identified at the Surry Station is relevant to the Brunswick site.
