- April 8,1996 Mr. James E. Snyder Regulatory Compliance Manager McGuire Nuclear Station
Subject:
AT&T Round Cell Battery Capacity After Recharge Periodic Update per 12/05/95 Letter to NRC, Commitment #2 PIP 0-M95 2131, Corrective Action #2 In letter dated 12/05/95, McGuire committed to periodically inform the NRC of the status of the dialog between McGuire and the vendor regarding recovered battery capacity immediately following recharging. The following is an update status of the dialog:
AT&T has submitted a proposal and plan for additional testing (Phase III) to determine the optimal recharge methodology. AT&T has agmed to fully fund this testing, with the stipulation of mmaining h full control of the project. The testing will be proprietary due to possible speculation and mitinterpretation ofinterim results. AT&T will be issuing periodic status repons and the project b scheduled to extend through 1996. Therefore, final conclusions may not be know and a final repo.t issued until the fint quatter of 1997. The test plan involves various methods of recharge and discharge of dedicated high specific gravity cells. The testing will be conducted at the C&D test facility in Conshohocken, PA. and directed by AT&T engineem.
The Dallas Works - Power Systems Division of AT&T has reorganized and will be identified as Lucent Technologies. It is not known at this time how this mstructuring will affect future communication and support. As a result of restmeturing, there is a new Round Cell Product Manager, Dr. K.A. Murugesamoonhi. ESE Engineering has been in communication with Dr.
Murugesamoorthi, and will be working with Lucent Technologies and Bell Laboratories on these issues.
McGuire has developed a draft Charter for the AT&T Round Cell Nuclear Utility User's Council.
It has been sent to Council membem for review and comments. Plans are to incorporate comments, issue a second draft, discuss and hopefully finalize the Charter at the next Council meeting,4/18/%.
