Dear Mr. Youngblood:
Reference:
(1)
Fermi 2 NRC Docket No. 50-341 (2)
Detroit Edison to NRC letter
" Qualification of Fire Doors", NE-85-0030, January 23, 1985.
Subject:
Additional Fire Protection Information Based on discussions with your staff (Mr. M. D. Lynch, Licensing Project Manager for Fermi 2, and Mr. J.
F. Stang of the Chemical Engineering Branch) and Mr. Charles Ramsey
(
of NRC Region III, the following additional information is submitted as attachments to this letter:
o Attachment A - Contains additional information in support of the reference (2) letter.
Specifically, it states that by fuel load all UL required modifications will have been completed for the applicable fire door / frame assemblies to make them conform to accept-able UL design criteria.
For two doors (doors 3-20 and 3-13) which deviated slightly from criteria, deviation requests with appropriate justification are provided.
o Attachment B - Reports the results of an evaluation of fire detector placement at Fermi 2 with respect to NFPA 72E.
Interim deviations are requested with respect to NFPA 72E until June 30, 1985 for several detection zones to allow for installation and relocation of detectors as recommended by the evaluation.
Permanent deviations from NFPA 72E are requested for four areas i
based on the justifications provided.
Three of the deviation evaluations were performed for Detroit Edison by Professional Loss Control, Inc. and one was per-formed by Detroit Edison.

February 4,19 85 NE-85-0275 Page 2 o Attachment C - Contains an evaluation of the hydro-static testing of the Fermi 2 fire protection yard piping performed by Professional Loss Control, Inc.
Though the test results indicate a deviation from the leakage criteria of NFPA 24 for new installations, Detroit Edison considers the results acceptable.
Based on discussions with NRC Region III, however, Detroit Edison has committed to reperform the hydro prior to June 30, 19 85, to better quantify the system leakage.
A code inquiry is also being made to address the question of the proper pressure at which to conduct the test.
o Attachment D - Contains an evaluation of certain
" ganged" fire damper assemblies based on discussions with your S taf f.
Appropriate 'eviation requests with justification are provided fot
