Student Emergency Action Plan Brochure

&gg Your school is located within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone fcr Duke Power Company's Catawba Nuclear Station. The enclosed informa-tion concerns the emergency action plan for the station and the role that schools will play in that plan. We expect the plant to operate safely. The plan will probably be used only for a drill. We want you, the students and the schools to be prepared - to know what the emergency sirens mean and what to do if you hear them.

The emergency action plan was developed by Duke Power Company with the cooperation of the State of South Carolina and York County. It is designed to ensure pub! c safety in the event of an incident at Cataw tia Nuclear Station or a natural or manmade disaster.

Emergency action plan brochures will be mailed in February to all resi-dents within a 10-mile radius of Catawba. Information on how Cataw ba works, adiation and what you should do if you hear an alert siren are covered in the Catawba Nuclear Station Emergency Plan brochure.

The role schools will play in the emergency action plan is briefly discussed in this general public brochure. But students and their parents base more specific questions. In an ef fort to answer these questions. Duke Power Com-pany, in cooperation with county and state emergenc) planners and local school of ficials, has deseloped an emergency action plan brochure just for students. Information is also included on what to do if students are at home alone and hear the emergency alert sirens.

The Student Emergency Action Plan brochure is designed in a question and answer format. A letter from Jim Hampton, Catawba Plant Atanager, introduces the brochure and a map shows the school locations and zones.

A chart indicates shelters for each school. An individual information card for each student is also enclosed.

The brochures will be distributed in the schools either by classroom or assembly program during the first week of February. This letter and the general public brochure will provide background information f or you before the distribution.

Please briefly cover the information in the brochure with your students.

Make sure they understand what it is all abcut. The student information card,' accompanying the student brochure, requires action on your part.

' As a groep, have the students fill in the " school side" of the card. The information can be found on the chart in the student brochure. Every child at your school will use the same inforn ation for the " school side" of the card.

Remind and encourage the students to take the information home.

The."home AIM vi the information card should be filled out with the help of parents or guardians.. The card should be posted in a convenient place where it can easily be found.

Your cooperation and help with the distribution of the student brochures is invaluable. Without you, we would not be as successful in getting this important information to the people who need it. If you love questions or comments concerning'this program, please call me at 704/373-3107. Again, thank you for your time.
