On July 18, 1989, the NRC issued Generic L, ter 89-13 to inform licensees of service water system problems affecting sa..ty-related systems.

Generic letter 89-13 also providu recommended actions to ensure that service water systems are maintained in accordance with the appropriate regulatory requirements.

By letter dated January 23, 1990, the Farley Nuclear Plant program for implementation of Generic letter 89-13 was provided to the NRC.

In the January 23, 1990 letter, the NRC was notified that a heat exchanger testing arogram was in place for safety-related room coolers (air-to-water heat exc1 angers) cooled by service water.

The orogram's purpose was to predict when corrective action (such as cleat necessary. Accordingly, APCo committed to adopt this same methr' ology to.

other heat exchangers required to be tested in re vonse to this generic letter.

Additionally, a commitment was made to provide confirmation that these initial tests and activities have been completed and that continuing programs have been established.

The initial Unit 2 heat exchangers tests for diesel generator jacket water, containment coolers, component cooling water, service water lube oil, and the control room air conditioner were completed on June 29. 1992.

Southern Nuclear Operating Company has also established programs necessary to accomplish the other commitments made by APCo in the January 23, 1990, response to Generic Letter 99-13.

Initial tests for Unit I heat exchangers are scheduled to be completed during the current operating cycle.

Subsequent to completion of these activities for Unit 1, the NRC will be notified.
