Request for Additional Information Following Preliminary Staff Review of Licensee Responses to Generic Letter 83-28 Re: Byron Station, Units 1 and 2, and Braidwood Station, Units 1 and 2 The staff has completed a preliminary review to assess the completeness and adequacy of licensee responses to Generic Letter 83-28 Items ?.1, 2.2.2, 3.1.3, 3.2.3,.4.4 and 4.5.
For the Byron /Braidwood Units, your responses were.found to be incomplete for Items 2.1, 2.2.2, 4.5.2 and 4.5.3.
Brief descriptions of the deficiencies are given ~as guidelines for corrective action in the enclosed request for additional information. Efforts by Owners ' Groups, INP0 and NSSS Vendors have been or are being made to produce generic responses that may be useful in meeting the requirements of Generic Letter 83-28 Items 2.1,-2.2.2, 4.5.2 and 4.5.3.-
You may wish to contact your Owners' Group or INPO regarding the applicability of such generic responses to your Byron /Braidwood units.
In order to preserve our present review schedule, the staff needs to have the supplementary information within 60 days for Items 2.1, 2.2.2, and within 90 days for Items 4.5.2 and 4.5.3.
We request your cooperation in meeting this schedule.
This reluest for additional information was approved by the Office of Management and Budget under clearance number 3150-0011 which expires April 30, 1985.

ENCLOSURE BYRON /BRAIDWOOD Item 2.1 (second part) - Incomplete Applicant needs to submit detailed information describing its ' vendor interface program for reactor trip system components.
Information supplied should state how the progran assures that vendor technical information is kept complete, current, and controlled-throughout the life of the plant and should also indicate how the program will be implemented at Byron /Braidwood.
Item 2.2.2 - Incomplete Applicant needs to present its evaluation of the NUTAC program and-describe how it will be implemented at Byron /Braidwood. The staff found the NUTAC program fails to address the concern about establishing and maintaining an interface between all vendors of safety-related equipment and the utility.
Accordingly the applicant will need to supplement its response to address this concern. This additional information should describe how current pro-cedures will be modified and new ones initiated to meet each element of the item 2.2.2 concern.
Item 4.5.2 - Incomplete Applicant needs to describe design m'difications that will permit on-line o
test of the RTS and provide an implementation schedule.
Item 4.5.3 - Incomplete Applicant needs to provide results of review of existing or proposed intervals for on-line testing considering the concerns of 4.5.3.1 to 4.5.3.5 in the generic letter. This information shall show how the selected intervals result in high reactor trip system availability and include any' proposed Technical Specification changes resulting from this review.
