Catawba Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 50-413 and 50-414 4

Reactor Trip System Instrumentation Response Times I

)

Duke Power Company letter to your staff, dated November 19,1987, "RTD Bypass

]

Removal", states that the 8 second allowance for Overtemperature A T and Oveipressure A T is divided into 6.0 seconds for the RTD and 2.0 seconds for the cabinet electronics.

This purpose of this letter is to notify your staff of a correction to the components that l

make up the 8 second allowance. Of the total 8 second delay allowance,6.5 seconds is I

attributed to the RTD and 1.5 seconds attributed to cabinet electronics.

This discrepancy was discovered while preparing the Catawba Nuclear Station Design Basis Document (DBD) for the NSSS Process Instrumentation and Control System (EIA).

t Catawba Technical Specifications Table 3.3-2, " Reactor Trip System Instrumentation

(

Response Times" specifies s 8 seconds for Overtemperature A T and Overpressure A T l

reactor trip functions. Catawba Nuclear Station meets, and is in compliance with this l

specification for total delay. There is no specification for the components of this total 8 second delay. Therefore, the change in how the total delay is divided in no way impacts plant operations or compliance to the Catawba Technical Specifications. This l

notification of the total delay split serves to correci the previous stated discrepancy and is for your awareness only.

If there are any questions, please feel free to call Jeff Lowery at (803) 831-3414.

Sincerely, l
