J 3.0 DISCUSSION 4- '
The type of waste covered by this document is powdered ion exchange
\\;
h resia. In order to ensure that the contents of the liners to be L.j.
processed fall within the acceptable range with respect to the 4
parameters, samples of the liner contents must be analyzed prior
.i to solidification. Analysis includes pH, detergents, a visual determination of oil content, an isotopic analysis and weight L'
percent of the slurry.

7.0 PROCEDURE'
}
NOTE:
'}
Data taken as instructed in this section shall Ae
{
recorded on the attached Waste Solidification Data Sheet, Attachment A.
.t 7.1 Chemical Analysis and Pretreatment ii 3
7.1.1 EXAMINE the samples for evidence of detergents.
If large quantities of detergents are present, the sample should be treated with an anti-foaming The quantity of anti-foaming agent required agent.
shall be recorded on Attachment A.
j.
7.1.2 lf EXAMINE the surface of the sample for any signs of oil.
If a measurable quantity of oil exists, determine the volume and record it as a percent of
!j the total sample volume, otherwise note "none" or "less than one percent" (11) by volume. If the j
quantity of oil is greater than 1% by volume, the oil shall be reduced to greater than 1% by skimming prior to recording.
!i l}
7.1.3 MEASURE the pH of the sample and record.
}(
NOTE:
1 If necessary, adjust the pH to greater
!i than 4 using 50 weight percent sodium lj hydroxide solution. The quantity of ij.
sodium hydroxide added shall be recorded
[
on Attachment A.
7.1.4
.j PERFORM an isotepic analysis of an appropriate aliquot of the sample.
!!!j' 7.1.5
,j AI.10W the sample to settle for thirty (30) minutes and determine the volume percent settled solids.
7.1.6 Using Attachment B of this procedure, and the
.t volume percent settled solids determined in step 7.1.5, DETEFVE the approximate wet weight

percent settled. 41da.
i 7.2 Test Solidification 7.2.1 Using the wet weight percent solids determined in j
7.1.6 and Attachment C, DETERMINE the quantity of cement to mix with a 200 al waste sample. These
,I quantities are given on the left hand scale.
7.2.2 MEASURE out the required quantity of cement as j
determined in 7.2.1.

cate equal to 10 percent of the cement quantity.
s j
7.2.4 HIX the cement and additive together and slowly j
add this mixture to the test sample while.it is F

electric mixer or by hand.
i:
-7.2.5 After sufficient mixing (2 minutes after all cement and anhydrous sodium metasilicate have been 7
added) so that a homogeneous mixture is obtained, allow the waste to CURE for a minimum of 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
.
7.3 Solidification Acceptability b
The following criteria define an acceptable solidification process and process parameters.
j.
7.3.1 The sample solidifications are considered acceptable 3
if there is no visual or drainable free water.
E jl
[
]'jl 7.3.2 The sample solidifications are considered acceptable if upon visual inspection the waste appears that it would hold its shape if removed from the beaker 7
and it resists penetration.
[
j 7.4 solidification Unseceptability
(
i b
1 7.4.1 If a test sample fails to provide acceptable i
solidification, perform the following steps:
)
i
]
a.
Hix equal volumes of dry cement and water to i
)
ensure that the problem is not a bad batch of J
cement.
A b.
Add additional caustic to raise t}e pH above E
J 8.
=
9 If the waste is only partially solidified, c.
use lower waste to cement and additive ratios.
g E
Using the quantities of cement and anhydrous O
E sodium metasilicate as determined in 7.2.1, reduce the sample volume by 25 ml.
U d.
Perform another test solidification using the 5-2 revised waste to cement ratios. Continue f,
lowering the waste to cement ratios until the L
acceptability criteria of 7.3 are a.et.

To determine the quantity of 50% NaOH or actifoam agent, towedd to the liner, use the following equation:
al 50% NaOH used for a 200 m1 sample fts of waste in liner 26.72
= gallons of 50% NaOH to add to liner (or antifoan) 2 The additive used in this procedure is anhydrous sodium metasilicate.
