5.0 DISCUSSION The types of weste covered by this document are 20 to 25 weight percest sodium sulfate. In order to ensure that the contenta cf the tasks to be processed fall within the acceptable range with respect to the parameters, samples of the tank contents must be i

analysed prior to solidification. Analysis includes pH, deter-

6.0 PREREQUISITES

!i.

6.1 Ensure that a Weste Solidification Data Sheet, Attachment A, I

has been initiated for the solidification of sodium sulfate f

slurries.

r f-6.2 Chemistry has been advised that samples are to be taken for analysis for pH, oil, % sodium sulfate, temperature and for isotopic analycis.

7.0 PROCEDURE 4

NOTE:

Data taken as instructed in this section shall be recorded on the attached Waste Solidification Data 1,

Sheet, Attachment A.

J 7.1 Chemical Analysis and Pretreatment

.1 8

7.1.3 OBTAIN an appropriate amount of sample.

L 7.1.2 EXAMINE the sample for evidence of detergents. If I

large quantities of detergents are present, the 4

sample should be treated with an anti-foaming f

agent. The quantity of anti-foamins agent shall be recorded on Attachment A.

g 6

7.1.3 AI.IM the sample to cool to 90-100*F if necessary.

8l(

Do not allow the sample to cool below 90' as crys-j tallization may occur.

3 7.1.4 EXAMINE the surface of the sample for any signs of oil. If a measurable quantity of oil existo, determine the volume and record it as a percent of the total sample volume, otherwise note "None" or j

"Less than one percent" (1%) by volume. If the quantity of oil is greater than 1% by volume, the oil shall be reduced to less than 1% by skimming i

prior to recording.

j 7.1.5 MEASURE the pH of the liquid and record.

NOTE:

If necessary, adjust the pH to greater f

than 7 usisg 50 weight percent sodium i

hydroxide solution. The quantity of I

sodium hydroxide added shall be recorded j

on Attachment "A".

fj, 7.1.6.

DETERMINE the density of the liquid phase with a j

hydrometer. Record the density and return the liquid to the sample.

j

.l(

7.1.7 Using Attachment "B", CONVERT the density deter-mined in 7.1.5 to weight percent sodium sulfate t

7.2 Test Solidification

(

7.2.1 MEASURE 200 ml of waste slurry into a 1000 ml E

disposable beaker or similar sized container.

h uh 7.2.2 MEASURE out the required quantities of cement and anhydrous sodium metasilicate as shown below.

$a

 • h 7.2.3 MIX the cement and additive together and slowly g

add this mixture to the test sample while it is 1,l beini stirred. Stirring can be accomplished by i

electric _ mixer or by hand.

f*t ii 7.2.4 After sufficient mixing (2 minutes after all the 1

cement and additive have been added) so that a-

{

~ ~homogenous mixture has.been obtained, allow the y

f sample to CURE for a minimum of 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
.

P32 6 of 7 o'I.

- i I To determine the quantity of 50% Na05 or antifoam agent to add to the liner, use the following equation:

e al 50% NaOH (or antifoam) used for 200 m1 sample a it.s of waste in liner 26.72

= gallons of 50% Na0H to add to liner (or antifoam) 2 Ratios in this procedure yield a cement ratio of 43.3 lbs/ft.s 3 The additive used in this procedure is anhydrous sodium metasilicate.

. Ratios in this procedure yield an additive ratio of 4.3 lbs/ft.s
