Dear Mr. Johnson:

Since our letter of reference 1, we have investigated the possibility of replacing the existing reactor plant exhaust detector with an extended range monitor.

In the original proposal, we had planned to dilute the incoming air by approximately 200 times to extend the range of the existing monitor to meet the requirements of NUREG-0737, item II.F.1.1.

In talking with the original manufacturer of the

monitor, it was found that a new detector is in the final stages of development that could measure noble gas concentrations up to 10E03rci/cc.

Replacing the existing detector with a higher range monitor is more desirable than a dilution system due to simplified design and lack of added error due to flow control instruments used to get accurate flow dilution.

Our proposed schedule is to evaluate the operation and final specifications of this new detector and provide a detailed design within 6 months of this letter on the extended range detector or a dilution system if we are unable to use this detector.

The new detection system will then be inservice by the end of the 4th 7: walk 4g A vs p
