Dear Mr. Martin:

The Reference provided an interim 10CFR50.55(e) report which documented several welding deficiencies identified during a recent reinspection of safety-related AWS Dl.1 structural steel welds. The Reference further stated that an extensive corrective action plan was being initiated. This letter provides the details of Kansas Gas and Electric Company's (KG&E) comprehensive program to correct the identified deficiencies and provide assurance that the construction of Wolf Creek Generating Station (WCGS) meets applicable regulatory and design requirements.

The details of KG&E's findings and corrective actions are contained in Enclosures 1 and 2.

These Enclosures are described below: is a copy of KG&E Corrective Action Request (CAR)

  1. 19 which documents the hardware and program deficiencies associated with safety-related AWS Dl.1 structural steel welding.

The CAR was generated by KG&E Quality Assurance and was trans-mitted to KG&E Construction for resolution. In addition to identifying the problems associated with structural steel welding, the CAR recommends certain corrective actions to address and resolve the deficiencies. is a copy of KG&E Construction's response to CAR #19. '

This enclosure provides the details of the comprehensive corrective actions being taken to resolve the concerns identified in the CAR (Enclosure 1).

The corrective actions documented in Enclosure 2 are scheduled for completion by December 1,1984. Upon completion of these actions, KG&E will submit a final report to you on this subject.
