Dear Mr. Keppler:
This letter serves as the interim report pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e) on the potential significant deficiency regarding voltage drops affecting the Division 1, 2, and 3 Emergency Service Water pumps and their associated discharge valves.

1985, by Mr. T. A. Boss of The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company that this problem was being evaluated per our Deviation Analysis Report Number 224, 1
This report contains a description of the deficiency, our planned actions to complete our evaluation and the date for submittal of our next report on this subject.
Description of Deficiency Calculations have indicated that the control circuit voltage drop in the close control circuits of the Division 1, 2 and 3 Emergency Service Water pumps, IP45-C001A, IP45-C001B, and IP45-C002 may be large enough to result in non-operation of those pumps.
i Completion of Evaluation l
Field testing of the close control circuits has shown that all three divisions function properly; however, the testing performed did not simulate the DC voltage that would be present should the Emergency Service Water system be activated in response to a LOCA with a simultaneous loss of the battery charger. While it has been determined that the calculation for the Division 3, IP45-C002, control circuit was conservative enough to assure proper operation in an undervoltage situation, additional test data and/or evaluation is 3s.
required to verify whether or not the Division 1 and 2 close control circuits would operate properly under the above conditions.
