Subject:

LaSalle County Station Units 1 and 2 SER Fire Protection Erratta and Clarifications

-NRC Docket Nos. 50-373 and 50-374 Reference (a):. N'JREG 0578, SER, SSER 5, and SSER 8.

Dear,

Mr. Denton:

Our review of Reference (a) identified a number of typographical errors which need correcting to provide a correct and complete record.

These errors are corrected below.

Additionally, the following comments identify additional changes that we recommend'you make in a future supplement.

These changes are necessary to make the SER consistent with the FSAR and to CECO's commitments or to provide a more accurate description to assist with future interpretations of the SER.

.H.-R..Denton' September 17, 1984 Original SER Comment Page 9-16-line 4 Change "below" to "above" Automatic ionization detectors are provided for the cables above-the suspended ceiling in the lab.

Fire detection is also provided in the ventilation ductwork for this zone.

Sec. H.3.4.18 of the FSAR describes this zone and the response to Q10.65 (10) describes CECO's commitment regarding detection plus addition of a sprinkler system to further protect the cable trays.

The detection and protection have been installed as described in the FSAR Sec. H.3.4.18.

CECO did not commit to, nor have we installed, additional detectors in 4F3.

Page 9-17 line 26 Change "adress" to " address" Page-9-21 line 18 Change "below the dropped ceiling" to "in the" Commitments regarding control room detectors are identified in the FSAR Sec. H.3.4.3 and in response to FSAR Q10.56(1)(2).

We asked Schirmer Eng. Corp.

to specifically review this SER statement and their conclusion is the control room.is adequately protected with the current installation (see also the report entitled " Report No. 1 - Analysis of Fire Detector Locations at LaSalle County Station").

Note that there is no dropped ceiling between the front and back row panels.

" tray"

2) Delete the sentence beginning with "This conduit.

and add "This tray has been wrapped in a 1 1/2 hour Kaowool blanket to a point more than 50 feet from its redundant division."

H. R. Denton-September 17, 1984 This change was identified in a letter from L.O.

DelGeorge to A. Schwencer dated November 3, 1981 as a deviation from Appendix R to 10CFR50.

The NRC accepted this and said we do not deviate from Appendix R Section III.G.

One RHR instrumentation cable (lRH500) in the wrapped tray is approximately 40 feet from its redundant division.

This tray, in the reactor building, was wrapped from the floor t' col-row C-10.

Page 9-24 line 5 Change "3-hour" to "non" These cubicles, located in the quadrants on the 673'4" and 694'6" el. of the reactor building are separated from the reactor building main floor by concrete walls with non-rated doors and ventilation systems without fire dampers.

These cubicles were identified as non-rated in the FSAR sections

' describing zones 2H,3H,2I and 3I.

Also the color drawings in Ch. 9 of the FSAR show there walls as non-rated.

The separation of reactor building safe shutdown trains is provided by separation of the building into north and south sides as documented in the response to FSAR Question 10.74 and_SER Supplement 5, Section 9.5.4.

The quadrant rooms containing the' safety-related pumps utilize the same redundant safe shutdown train as the reactor building main area subzone to which they are adjacent.

Comment A 3-hour rated wall between the quadrant rooms and their respective reactor building main area subzone is not necessary because these walls separate equipment in the same redundant safe shutdown train.

Credit was not taken for a fire rating on these cubicle walls (nor for the floors or ceilings) in the safe shutdown analysis of the reactor building.

SSER 5 Comment Page 9-3 Line 34-Change " west" to " north" Page 9-3 Line 35 Change " east" to " south" This is in accordance with CECO's response to FSAR Q10.74.
