Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station (OCNGS)
Docket No. 50-219 SEP Topic No. IX-5 Ventilation System During the integrated assessment of the SEP topics, the NRC staff re-quested GPUN to provide reliable ventilation for the B battery and motor generator room and the 460 V switchgear room at OCNGS.
A review of the associated control circuitry for the HVAC fans has deter-mined that the ventilation system for the above mentioned rooms is started by energizing one relay (Relay K). Energization of the relay applies power to both supply and exhaust fans. Therefore, a failure of the relay would disable both the exhaust and supply fans. The power supplies to the fans are redundant.
Based on the above finding, GPU Nuclear has decided to provide a new redundant relay with a switch and associated wiring for each room. With this modification, on loss of power or loss of the existing relay, the other fan which receives power from a separate MCC can be manually started from the MCC thereby maintaining sufficient air circulation.
Loss of the Relay K will also activate an alarm in the control room.
