Dear Sir:

- The NRC was notified of a potentially reportable deficiency in the referenced telephone conversation. At that time, it was estimated that a determination of reportability would be made within thirty (30) days.

Due to the extensive investigation and evaluation required, an Interim Report is attached. It is now expected that this information will be finalized by September 27, 1984, at which time a complete report will be s ubmitted..

ll INTERIM REPORT - DER 84-44 POTENTIAL REPORTABLE DEFICIENCY ARIZONA PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY (APS)

PVNGS UNITS 1, 2, 3 I.

Potential Problem C-E letter V-CE-30348, dated June 6, 1984, advisesothat North East Utilities has reported a 10CFR Part 21 relative to fatigue failures of the Gaulin Charging Pump block failures.

These pumps are similar to those supplied to PVNGS.

II.

Approach To and Status Of Proposed Resolution Bechtel Engineering is currently corresponding with Combustion Engineering (C-E) to investigate this problem and determine the reportability. Bechtel has requested C-E to provide additional information on this problem as it becomes available, and APS to contact North East Utilities for further details concerning the pump fatigue failures.

III.

Projected Completion of Corrective Action and Submittal of the Final Report Evaluation of this condition and submittal of the Final Report is forecast to be completed by September 27, 1984.
