2) SLNRC 83-009 dated 2/18/83, Significant Deficiency Report 83-02, Re Battery Charger Failure Subj: Final Report, Potential 10CFR50.55(e) - Power Conversion Products Battery Chargers

Dear Mr. Johnson:

This letter ricavides the final 10CFR50.55(e) report concerning miscellaneous component fa a res in the safety-related battery chargers. This matter was initially reported by Mr. Otto Maynard of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) to Mr. Johns Jaudon of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, on March 9, 1983.

Af ter initial energization of the battery chargers supplied by Power Con-version Products Incorporated (PCP), a number of component failures were identified and documented. With the exception of the deficiency reported in Reference 2), none of the failures, if considered singularly, were significant.

However, approximately 25 component failures occurred within a two-year period on the five safety-related chargers and additional failures occurred on the non-safety-related chargers of the same type. Typical component failures included failure of capacitors, alarm cards and amplifier cards. A Startup Field P9 port (1-NK-30) provides a complete description and history of the failuru Meetings were held between the Architect Engineer (A/E) and PCP to determine the course of action to take.

It was decided to have PCP thoroughly inspect, upgrade and test all battery chargers. These actions have been completed, and the battery chargers are now fully qualified for performing their function.

If you have any questions concerning this subject, please contact me or Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.
