Anchor Darling 10" Gate Valve
Dear Mr. Hunter:
This letter withdraws the potential 10CFR50.55(e) report concerning a ten-inch gate valve manufactured by Anchor Darling. This matter was initially reported by Messrs. Maynard and Lindsay of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) to Mr. William Johnson of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, on February 23, 1984.
An Anchor Darling gate valve in the essential service water system was found to be operating improperly, and a subsequent investigation showed that it could have possibly failed in the open position. This valve is normally open during operation and safe shutdown of the plant, and is closed only during the performance of maintenance activities.
As such, the operation of the valve does not represent a safety concern and would not adversely affect the safety of operations. Therefore, KG&E has concluded that this matter is not reportable pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e).
