Dear Mr. Denton:

The purpose ~of this letter is to provide the plan and schedule for the Catawba Nuclear Station Operational Fog Monitoring Program, as discussed in the FES, page 5-53.

- A limited operational fog monitoring program began at Catawba Nuclear Station on September-1, 1984 and will continue through the winter of 1984-1985. This limited program consists of visual observation from the Catawba Station and

- Wylie Hydro Station as was done in the preoperatior.al program. In addition, potential severe steam fog' events will be observed by Duke Meteorologists.

An interim report on this phase will be submitted by May 15, 1985. The final report will be< issued prior to commercial operation of Unit 2.

- The operational fog monitoring program, with both units on line, will then be implemented for one year. This program will consist of complete monitoring data, including fog visiometer, surface water temperature, and visual observation.

A full report on the study will then be submitted upon completior of the project.

This schedule reflects our position that any significant effects would be seen with both Units on line.

Very truly yours,

/
