Subcooling Core Monitor Alarm and Caution Relays
Dear Mr. Hunter:
ThJ s letter provides an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) concerning the subcooling core monitor system installed at Wolf Creek Generating Station (WCGS). This concern was initially reported by Mr. H.K. Chernoff of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) to Mr. Lawrence Martin of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, on August 21, 1984.
During final testing, which utilized field inputs, of the subcooling core monitor system, it wac observed that when the system goes into the alarm state the functioning of the subcooling core monitor processor is impaired.
Initial investigation indicated that this condition is possibly the result of arcing or ' noise' interference from an adjoining alarm relay. An engineering evaluation of this matter is presently being conducted by the Architect / Engineer.
The status of this potential 10CFR50.55(e) will be carried on the monthly status update as file 53564-K150. The final report or any eignificant new information will be submitted by separate correspondence. In the interim, please direct any questions concerning this subject to me or to Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.
