Dear.Mr. Denton:

l On; March _21, 1984' representatives from Duke Power Company met with the NRC  ;

' Staff.to discuss Duke's proposed program for resolution of the TDI diesel .

generator issue for Catawba. This' meeting, and a follow-up letter dated  !

April:5,1984, provided a detailed description of the Extended Operation Test of the Catawba 1A diesel generator and the proposed inspection plan.

4 The i_nspection program involved' extensive disassembly of the diesel'and 100%

-inspection of parts for which there was a history of problems or other reasons l for special concern. . Substantial sampling inspections were-performed on l

- .other important, parts where there was no history of problems._ A preliminary i report detailing the status of the component revalidation inspection program

was prepared by Duke and submitted to the NRC on June 1, 1984. 'This' report.

9 icovered the-results of over 76% of total inspections to be performed. Rep-  :

resentatives from Duke met with the NRC Staff on June 21,'1984 to discuss.

Inspection of the.1 A diesel is"now ' complete, except for. a few inspections s

n that must be performed during or. following engine reassembly. The attached

' report describes the results of the inspections and evaluations performed. i

'This report addresses over 99% of-the inspection plan which includes about 'I

~4,800fseparate inspections.--Results_of remaining inspections during engine .,

._ reassembly will.be documented in the Owners Group Phase II program. ,

b As a result of the Extended Operation Test of the Catawba 1A diesel generator l

and the extensive. inspections conducted, it is concluded that TDI diesel ,
