Dear Sir:

The NRC was notified of a potentially reportable deficiency in the referenced telephone conversation. At that time, it was estimated that a determination of reportability would be made within thirty (30) days.

Due to the extensive investigation and evaluation required, an Interim Report is attached. It is now expected that this information will be finalized by August 31, 1984, at which time a complete report will be submitted.

1. Potential Problem (

. Valve 2JSIBUV636 stalls just off the closed seat position when opening or closing. Valve was disassembled and chatter marks were found along guide for the valve disk. Chatter marks may have been result of excessive clearance between disk and guide. This problem may.be related to the opening problem for other HPSI header valves as documented in DER 83-63.

Approach To and Status of Proposed Resolution Bechtel engineering is currently corresponding with Combustion Engineering on this problem to determine reportability and technical justification for corrective action.  ;

III. Projected Completion of Corrective Action and' Submittal of'the Final

Evaluation of this condition and submittal of the Final Report is Forecast to be completed by August 31, 1984. [
