Dear Sir:
j I
Based on my discussions with senior San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS)
Operations personnel and engineering stalTmembers, I believe the SONGS Unit 2 and Unit 3 pressurizers to be undersized My concem had been submitted to the SONGS Nuclear Oversite Group prior to leaving SONGS but a satisfactory answer was not received. With this letter it is requested the 10CFR2.206 petition process be initiated and that the NRC detennine the adequacy of the si7e of the pressurizers at SONGS Units 2
)
and 3.
Analyzing the ratio of pressurizer size to thermal output at Palo Verde versus this same ratio at SONGS immediately produces an element of doubt. Undersized pressurizers will make plant transients more difUce:; ao handle and increase the probability of an accident.
The pressurizers were undersized in an attempt to reduce construction and equipment cost andjustify the economic feasibility of the Units.
Thank you for your attention to this concern.
Sincerely, O,
Y Glen R. Mills I
