Dear Neighbor:

This summer, Duke Power will place 64 sirens in the area around the Catawba Nuclear Station. The sirens are part of the emergency plan for people who live within 10 miles of the station.

Duke will start installing the sirens this month, and should finish in July.

You will probably hear the sirens go off during this time as we test the system.

If there were ever an emergency at the station, the sirens would go off.

A steady, three-minute signal would sound to tell you there is an emergency.

Duke Power owns the sirens. We place them in areas around the station and make sure they are working. However, your county emergency preparedness agency controls and operates the sirens.

As your neighbor, we want you to know as much as you can about the plant.

We also want to answer any questions you might have. To do this, we have planned a series of meetings throughout the 10-mile area around Catawba. You are invited to attend any one of these meetings. The following times and dates have been set for your area:

May 16 7:00 p.m.

New Hope Elementary School, Gastonia NC May 19 7:00 p.m.

Carmel Junior High, Charlotte, NC May 25 7:00 p.m.

Olympic High School, Charlotte, NC Duke Power Company employees and representatives from local emergency preparciness agencies will ba at each of the meetings to answer your questions.
