Dear Mr. Crutchfield:

Subject:

Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station Docket No. 50-219 Environmental Qualification of Equipment Important to Safety In accordance with your letter of May 9,1984, the following infonnation is provided.

At present, there are no outstanding justifications for continued operation (JC0's) that need to be docketed for the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station.

Item No.1 of your letter represents a significant expansion of our existing JC0's and requires that each JC0 be thoroughly reviewed prior to certifying "No significant degradation of any safety function or misleading infonnstion to the operator as a result of failure of equipment under the accident environment resulting from a design _ basis event will occur." Because of the magnitude of the work effort involved, GPUN will be unable to submit this information until September 1,1984.

With respect to Items No. 2 & 3, we cannot certify, at this time, that the methodology used to identify equipment within the scope of 10 CFR 50.49 (b)(2) utilized the steps stated in your letter. GPUN is in the process of obtaining contractor services to ensure that methodology is followed.

The expected completion date is September 1,1984. Any additional equipment that may be identified not to be environmentally qualified will be supplied at this time with the appropriate JCO.
