Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. Crutchfield:
Subject:
Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station Docket No. 50-219 SEP Topic No. III-4B Turbine Missiles During the integrated assessment of the subject SEP topic, GPUN agreed to provide a volumetric inspection frequency for 1cw pressure turbine discs based on the results of the inspection conducted by General Electric in 1983.
The safety objection of this SEP topic is to ensure that the structures, systems, and components important to safety have adequate protection against potential turbine missiles either because of structural barriers or a high degree of assurance that failures at design or destructive overspeed will not occur.
In April and June, 1983, inspections were performed by General Electric on the shrunk-on wheels from LPA, LPB and LPC rotors.
Included were a visual examiniation, and ultrasonic examinations of the tangential entry dovetails, wheel bores and keyways.
The ultrasonic examination on wheel bores and keyways showed indications.
However, General Electric concluded that they do 1L^
affect the structural integrity of the wheels and keyways.
GPb Nuclear reviewed their evaluation and concurred with their conclusion.

. Based on the examination, General Electric recommended GPUN perform a complete ultrasonic inspection of the LPA, LPB and LPC wheels after approximately 6 years of additional operation.
It was also recommended tilat a magnetic particle inspection of the exterior wheel surfaces be conducted.
GPUN will follow the recommendations made by General Electric and perform the ultrasonic and magnetic particle inspection within 6 years of additional operation.
