USl!D IN FANJiOTOllS ON NOVliMBElll0JL85 l Pursuant to the lloard's Order of Feinuary 24, 1992, Alabarna Power Corupany (APCo) provides the following report on the levels of silicone oil in the GlihiS Level Transmitters and the lubricant being utilized in the containment fan motors and room conters outside containment on November 30,1985.

{LliWi_14tc; Transnl11tr.s Despite an extensive review of the GlihiS Level Transmitters maintenance records, APCo has been unable to determine definitively the levels of the silicone en in the transmitters on November 30,1985. The GlihiS installation manual, however, apressly identified the appropriate level of silicone oil for the eight transmitters. APCo believes that this installation manual was followed at the time of installation because had the appropriate level of silicone oil not been applied when the transmitters were originally installed, then APCo's quality assurance program or quality control propam should have discovered any deficiencies. No evidence of any such deficiency has been lound. lleiween the date of l installation and November 30,14SS. there are no recoras that would indicate that the level 9203110055 920305

of oil had fallen below the appropriate levels, with one exception. APCo has discovered a May 16,1985 Maintenance Work lletluest (MWit), which indicated that one of the eight ,

transmitters did not have the appropriate level of oil. The MWit says that the transmitter i

was filled at that time to the appropriate level. Other than the one transmitter reference in the MWit, APCo cannot determine conclusively the level of silicone oilin the transmitters ,

at the deadline.  ;

j'Intilum Ril_ Grease APCo has researched the Farley Nuclear Plant lubrication records and confirmed that for Unit 1, Premium Itil grease has been applied to the containment fan motors and room coolers outside containment at least since September 21,1977. Moreover, Premium 118 .

grease has been used on these motors during each outage since that date. For Unit 2, APCo has been using Premium RB grease on the same motors at least since June 2,1981, and during each outage since that time. As a result of this review, APCo has reasonable assurance that as of November 30,1985, Premium IRB grease was being used in the motors at issue in this enforcement action.
