Docket No. STN 50-482 iO Subj: Potential 10CFR50.55(e) Interim Report -

l Anchor Darling 10" Gate Valve

Dear Mr. Gagliardo:

This letter provides an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) con-cerning a ten-inch gate valve manufactured by Anchor Darling. This matter was initially reported by Messrs. Otto Maynard and Michael Lindsay of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) to Mr. William' Johnson of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, on February 23, 1984.

A ten-inch gate valve (GNV042) manufactured by Anchor Darling was found to be operating improperly. This valve is located in the essential service water (EF) system. Disassembly and inspection revealed that when the valve was fully opened, the valve disc could become misaligned with the disc guide strips and potentially prevent the valve from closing properly. Preliminary investigation indicates that the valve guide strips are too short, thus al-lowing the valve disc to disengage from its guide strips and possibly bind on the valve body.

The aforementioned condition has been documented on a Startup Field Report (SFR) and an investigation is being conducted to determine the scope of this condition. Resolution of this matter will await conclusion of this investigation and final disposition of the subject SFR.

The status of this potential 10CFR50.55(e) will be carried on the monthly status update as file 53564-K123. The final report or any significant new information will be submitted by separate correspondence. In the interim, please direct any questions concerning this subject to me or to Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.
