Dear Mr. Gagliardo:
This letter provides the final 10CFR50.55(e) report concerning exposed threads on seal welded connections at Wolf Creek Generating Station.
This concern was initially reported by Kansas Gas and Electric Company on October 12, 1983. Additional information was subsequently provided in the Reference.
The Reference indicated that discrepancies were identified with two seal welded ASME Section IV, Class 2 threaded pipe connections. Contrary to this statement, only one seal welded threaded pipe connection was identified as having some threads neither removed or covered with weld material.
An investigation was initiated to determine if other examples of this condition existed in the field. As part of this investigation, an examination of seal welded connections selected at random was conducted.
None of the connectices inspected exhibited exposed threads. There fore,
KG&E has concluded that the identified connection with exposed threads represents an isolated case. The seal welded threaded pipe connection in Iuestian has been reworked, dye penetrant tested and found acceptable.
As a result of the above actions, no further corrective ar:ticn is deemed necessary. Please contact me or Mr. Otto Maynard of my staf f if you have any questions concerning this subject.
