. SALEM UNIT 1 OPERATIONS

SUMMARY

REPORT FEBRUARY 1984 Unit.~No.:l' began the' month operating at full power and remained at

~ full power'until February'24, when the unit tripped on generator neutral ground protection. Investigation revealed a failure in coil B31 outside the iron at the cooling water connection header box on the exciteriend along with se'veral loose generator coils. Additionally, many of' the coil diamond spacers were' found- to be loose and worn.

Other findings included copper splatter from the failed coil, and degraded insulation in.several areas. The full extent of the damage can not' be determined'until the generator rotor is removed and the 7

! investigation is completed. Disassembly of the generator is in progress,,with rotor removal expe,cted on March 7, 1984.
