Water Damaged Limitorque Operations Dear Mr. Gagliardo This letter provides an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) concerning water damaged limitorque operators at Wolf Creek Generating Station. This matter was initially reported by Mr. Harold Chernoff of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) to Mr. Doyle Hunnicutt of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, on February 3,1984.
During an Npection to verify the type of limit switch rotors installed, the actuator box of a limitorque motor operator was found to be nearly filled with water. Upon examination, corrosion of some electrical ter-minations was evident. This motor operator controls a valve located in
(
the Bortated Refueling Water Storage (BN) System. Subsequently, a h
limitorque motor operator in the Reactor Coolant (BB) System was found q
to be in a similar condition. As discovered, it is unlikely that either i
of these motor operators would have functioned as designed.
A preliminary investigation indicated that water may have entered the actuator boxes through installed flexible conduit, however, a thorough investigation is being condu;;ted to determine the exact cause and scope of this problem. Upon ec=pletion of thic invectigation corrective action will be implemented to resolve this matter.
The status of this potential 10CFR50.55(e) will be carried on the monthly status update as file 53564-K121. The final report or any significant new information will be submitted by separate correspondence. In the interim, please direct any questions concerning this subject to me or to Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.
