closure of TACs 76433 and 76434 Regarding NUREG-0737, I
<J Item II.D.1 f
By letters dated March 19 and tagust 1, 1990, McGuire summarized the status of our efforts in response to NUREG-0737, Item II.D.1,
" Performance Testing of Relief and Safety Valves," including the completion of the RELAP 5 thermal hydraulic and structural reanalysis.
The reanalysis concluded that by eliminating the water in the loop seal, the forces for the piping downstream of the pressurizer safety valves l
would be in compliance with the ASME Code.
Thus, modifications were prepared to (1) change the seal configuration for the existing code safety valves to seal with a steam medium and (2) install continuous drains for the existing loop piping.
The: schedule for completion of these modifications was based on equipment lead times and unit availability. This is to inform you that the McGuire Unit 2 valves and piping were modified during the EOC7 j
outage and the Unit 1 modifications were completed during the'EOC8 outage. These NSMs provide a continuous drain for the-loop seals on the i
Pressurizer Safety Valves and replaced the valve internals with new flexi-disc internals designed to seal on' steam. 'Also, new' tied expansion joints were installed on-the discharge piping.
In addition, new insulation'for the piping from the pressurizer nozzle to each of the safety valves was installed. The new insulation is qualified for use'in containment and is compatible with the piping material. The elimination of water in the loop seals results in a significant reduction of load on-
-the supports because the water hammer loads are eliminated. The.
{
' implementation of these design solutions such that the combined seismic
~
and transient forces are within Code allowable values, permanently I
resolve concerns regarding NUREG-0737, Item II.D.1.
